Are you already dreading the idea of spending yet another summer shaving, plucking, and waxing your hair away? We don’t blame you. Laser hair removal may remedy the perpetual plight of manual hair removal, but did you know it will work best if you start before the summer season begins?

Dr. Carrie L. Morris of Radiance Wellness MediSpa is a proponent of remedying aesthetic concerns during the winter months, especially hair removal — here’s why.

Why get laser hair removal in the winter?

People always say, “Summer bodies are made in the winter.” Usually, that statement refers to fat loss and muscle toning, but it can also encompass smooth skin. Winter is the best time to get laser hair removal for three main reasons: timing, weather, and skin condition.

Timing: To get a jumpstart on the flawless, silky complexion you want for summertime, start laser hair removal in the winter. You’ll likely need several treatments to achieve the level of hair removal you desire, the exact number depending on the treatment area, hair color, and density. If you start treatments in the winter, you’ll be ready to hit the beach by the start of summer.

Weather: For optimal results, you shouldn’t pluck or wax between laser hair removal sessions. In the spring or summer, you might grimace at the thought of leaving your legs exposed and unshaven while you wait for your next treatment. In the winter, that’s no issue — you’ll be covered up, anyway!

Skin condition: A good provider won’t perform laser hair removal while you’re sunburnt or have any skin lesions on the treatment area. Spring and summer are full of outdoor activities, such as hiking, beachgoing, and water skiing, that leave you prone to both. You would risk burning your skin if you have had sun exposure or tanning creams three weeks prior to treatment. Plus, tanned skin tends to be more resistant to laser hair removal. In the winter, you’re far less likely to run into issues with sunburn or skin injury. It’s also easier to keep your skin out of direct sunlight in the winter, which you’ll need to do for a few days while your skin heals from the laser treatment

Laser hair removal at home versus at a medical spa

In the cold winter months, you may feel tempted to do anything and everything at home, including laser hair removal. When there are so many devices and gadgets on the market, you may think, why not? But when you treat yourself at home, you risk safety and efficacy. Below, Dr. Morris explains the differences between laser hair removal at home and in a professional setting.

Accuracy: Professional-grade lasers are designed to be very precise and target individual hair follicles; administration by a trained professional improves their accuracy even more. With a handheld device, you may miss spots or beam too much light on some areas.

Speed: Chances are, you’ll fumble a bit with a handheld device until you learn how to use it properly. Once you’re comfortable with it, treatment times may take a while because of the low energy emitted from the device. Dr. Morris can treat larger areas of your body much more quickly.

Pain: You stand the chance of harming yourself when using an at-home laser. Under Dr. Morris’ care, you won’t experience a burn, rash, or other side effects that can come with at-home laser hair removal.

Effectiveness: Because at-home devices use much lower power than professional lasers, your hair may grow back more quickly and more densely.
