It’s common after childbirth to suffer from weak pelvic floor muscles after months of stretching and load bearing. The hormonal changes you encounter during pregnancy cause soft tissue to relax to accommodate giving birth, and it takes time for these tissues to recover.

It’s possible that these tissues will never return to pre-pregnancy conditions, particularly after multiple births. Kegels have long been the go-to in helping restore the condition of pelvic muscles to eliminate problems like urinary incontinence.

Menopause is another time when hormonal events can promote unwelcome changes in your pelvis. Kegels still help, and now there’s a light-based in-office treatment that can bolster your results. Called FemTouch™, the team at Radiance Wellness MediSpa recommends it for our patients suffering from vaginal atrophy who need a boost to the benefits of pelvic floor exercises.

The limits of Kegel exercises

Like any targeted strength exercise, Kegels introduce a series of contracting and relaxing cycles to a specific set of muscles to produce better tone and stronger function. However, because hormones affect more than just muscle tissue, Kegels are limited in the amount of change they can accomplish.

This is often the case after menopause, when changes to vaginal tissue contribute to a condition called the genitourinary syndrome of menopause, also known as GSM.

Symptoms of GSM

Kegels primarily help with urinary incontinence, but this is only one symptom of GSM. You may experience other signs of the condition, including:

  • Frequent urinary tract infections
  • Burning sensation while urinating
  • Urgent or frequent need to urinate, even when you can control leakage
  • Vaginal dryness
  • Discomfort or pain during or after intercourse
  • Reduced natural lubrication during sexual arousal
  • Changes to the size and shape of the vaginal canal

These symptoms sometimes arise as a result of reduced estrogen production. Your vaginal lining becomes thin and fragile, losing moisture and elasticity. Kegels can’t help with these conditions much beyond maintaining blood flow in the surrounding area.

How FemTouch can help

Cosmetic lasers have long been used to project through the skin to stimulate the growth of new collagen in the middle layers. FemTouch works the same way. Collagen is one of the most common proteins in the body, and it’s present below the surface of vaginal tissue.

Using a sterilized applicator, FemTouch directs a gentle light energy to stimulate collagen production behind your vaginal walls. The procedure is fast and painless, yet patients often notice a difference after their first session. A complete rejuvenation program typically involves 2-4 sessions for optimal results.

That’s it. There’s no need for anesthetics or sedation. The treatment portion of your appointment usually lasts less than five minutes, and you can go back to your regular day immediately afterward. While we recommend abstaining from sex for three days following treatment, there’s no other impact on your life as your body begins new tissue production.
