Botox Q & A

What is Botox?

Botox® is a popular, nonsurgical prescription injection that smooths out wrinkles for a more youthful appearance. Made from Botulinum Toxin A, Botox secured approval from the Food and Drug Administration in 2002 to treat frown lines between the eyebrows.

Since then, it has become the most widely used minimally invasive treatment to minimize wrinkles and frown lines. According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, seven million women and men had received Botulinum Toxin Type A injections in 2016 alone.

How does Botox reduce wrinkles?

Dr. Morris injects Botox into the facial muscles around your wrinkles or creases to block nerve impulses and relax the muscles. Because your facial muscles relax and stop contracting, your wrinkles become less evident, and you regain a refreshed, natural appearance.

What esthetic issues can Botox fix?

Botox freshens your appearance by smoothing the wrinkles on your face and neck, including the “elevens” between your eyebrows. Other common treatment areas address:

  • Jowls
  • Lip lines
  • Crow’s feet
  • Chin wrinkles
  • Gummy smile
  • Droopy eyebrows
  • Under-eye wrinkles
  • Neck cords and neck lines

In addition to wrinkle improvement, Dr. Morris uses Botox for facial sculpting and a liquid brow lift.

Can anyone get Botox injections?

Most women and men are suitable candidates for Botox. Generally, you must be a healthy adult between the ages of 18 and 65 to qualify.

The contraindications for Botox injections include:

  • Weak muscles in the injection area
  • Wrinkles that won’t smooth when you spread them apart
  • An infection or inflammation at the injection site

How long does Botox last?

You usually notice the results of Botox within 24 to 48 hours of your treatment, depending on the severity of your frown lines. Though the effects are temporary, the results can last for three or four months. Dr. Morris administers follow-up injections to maintain your new look.
